My thesis...some interesting results
So I finished with my exams and am back! as promised this time i hv come with results of my Msc Thesis. My thesis was about a comparative wardrobe analysis of German and Indian women consumers. The age group selected was 20-29 year old women and in order to make the data comparable, Indian women living in cities were considered.
Salient features of Indian respondents:
- Indian respondents can be divided into five groups according to their tendencies towards fashion – fashion ignorant, fashion splurger, fashion mediocre, trendsetter and fashion conscious shopper. To which category do you belong ??
- One-third Indian respondents have 50% stitched clothes and another one-third have 75% stitched clothes in their wardrobe. We enjoy having clothes made according to our fit, according to our designs and in the fabric we like.
- Out of 10 most possessed brands by Indian respondents, 6 are non-Indian. From these 6, 3 are sports brands (Nike, Rebbok and Adidas) and 2 famous jean brands ( Levi's, Lee). We shoud buy indian brands as well, there are so many nice ones in the market.
- More than 85% of Indian respondents buy fabric and get their clothes stitched.
- In their wardrobe, Indian respondents possess maximum number of t-shirts followed by salwaar kameez. Tshirt is universal favourite followed by jeans.
- Working women have more clothes in their wardrobes as compared to housewives and students. Working women have more economic freedom so why not.
- Age and number of clothes in the wardrobes of Indian respondents are directly proportional to each other. The older you are, more number of clothes you have.
- Frequency of buying clothes is dependent on the economic status of the household of respondent. Of Course the more money u have, frequenter u go for shopping!
Similarities between German and Indian respondents: - Both use TV and internet to obtain fashion information.
- Both enjoy shopping. I guess most of us just love that
- Both would love to buy brands other than what they buy now if they could afford. There are always so many brands that we would love to possess.
- T-shirt is the favourite garment of both Indian and German respondents followed by jeans.
- Both possess the common sport brands (Adidas, Nike and Reebok) equally. We also love sports dont we, but actually in India the sports brands are also worn more as casual wear.
- Average percentage of money spent on clothes is same for both. We are no less. This was really interesting to note that on an average we spend around 30-35% money at our disposal on clothes.
Differences between German and Indian respondents: - German respondents are more oriented towards trends. They do have more choice available.
- Indian women are more conscious about possessing in brands and using clothes for self expression. hmmm this came up as a surprise.
- Indian respondents lay more stress on practicality and comfort offered by the garments. In the extreme weather conditions we do need practical stuff.
- German respondents display more brand loyalty. They shd improve advertising in India ;-)
- Out of brands common both in India and Germany, the most possessed brand in Germany is Esprit and in India is Levis.
- German respondents have more total number of clothes in their wardrobe than Indian women.
- German respondents indulge more in spontaneous shopping as compared to Indian respondents. We would also love to do that if we could.
- German respondents on average buy clothes once a month as compared to Indian respondents who on an average buy clothes twice a month on an average. We do shop more often.

Shopping should be a sports in the Olympic Games!.... I LOVE to shop!
Very interesting results!
"Indian respondents lay more stress on practicality and comfort offered by the garments. --> Yes, indeed...the weather plays a big role...! I wonder if 'ethnic wear' is considered practical and comfortable and if that is also a reason why German women are more oriented towards trends...
I was so surprise to see how popular stitched clothes are in India. I have no imagination whatsoever and I would find it very difficult to ask a tailor what I would like to have stitched. Part of the fun of shopping for me is to look around & try things on. However, I realize it's very nice to have clothes that fit perfect.
Good job, Nidhi!...I'm so glad to know your exams went well!
