Happy Karva Chauth

The day of Karva Chauth is celebrated mostly amongst the entire North Indian community settled either in India and other parts of the world. The most important aspect of this day is that a dawn to dusk fast without water is undertaken by the North Indian married ladies and after seeing the moon the fast is finally broken. The fast is unique perhaps because nowhere in the world does a wife go without food or water just to pray for the longevity and well-being of her husband.
For me I have been always in Europe for all my Karva chauths so never got to celebrate in the Indian way, with other women doing Puja in the evening. For me the interesting part was henna applying, I used to put it on my left hand then vivek used to put it for me on my right hand so in the above snaps u can see actually how we have improved over the years in henna application :-). The interesting things about henna that I have heard from others here were: one time when it had been professionally done in India, one of viveks collegue thought i was wearing some kind of gloves:), one fo my classmates in Erlangen, a russian thought i had hurt myself so my skin had turend brown:-), rest others have always wondered if it wd go away or not..
This Karva chauth Vivek is in Belgium so i might go n have dinner with my other indian friend here Divya who is also keeping this fast.
SO HAppy KArva Chauth to you all there keeping fast today:-)

Of all the Indian festivities, 'Karva Chauth' was a huge culture-shocker for me. My initial reaction was: "So...when do husbands fast for their wifes?". An explanation of the historic background of this festivity has helped me to increase my understanding and respect for the rich and wonderful Indian culture. Simply amazing!
